Individual math tutoring can improve students' scores on the ACT and SAT examinations and improve their chances of being accepted at their colleges of choice.

When considering applications from high school students applying for admission, colleges and universities evaluate prospective students using many different criteria. Among the factors they may consider are a student's grade point average and academic achievement, attendance record, participation in extracurricular and community activities, recommendations from teachers and members of the community, athletic achievements, and students' essays describing their educational and career goals.

In addition to all of the above factors, however, almost all accredited colleges and universities also place a great deal of weight on a prospective student's scores on the ACT (American College Testing) or SAT (Scholastic Achievement Test) examinations. Both of these exams are designed to measure a student's ability to successfully complete college-level academic work, with special emphasis on language skills, reasoning, and mathematics.

I specialize in providing individual, one-on-one review and instruction to prepare for the mathematics part of the ACT or SAT exam.

Benefits of Individual ACT and SAT Tutoring

Professional, one-on-one ACT and SAT preparation offers significant advantages over classroom-style test prep courses. Private tutoring avoids wasting the student's time with dull review of material that he or she has already mastered. Instead, private ACT and SAT preparation begins with assessing an individual student's achievement, with the goal of discovering their individual areas of weakness and providing patient, individualized instruction to strengthen their achievement in those areas. Even good students usually have gaps in their learning. Individual tutoring is the best way to identify and remedy those gaps and score better on the ACT and SAT exams.

For maximum benefit, ACT and SAT preparation should be built around a structured curriculum that begins by assessing a student's mastery of all of the areas of mathematics competency that will be tested, and then addressing those areas in which the student needs more work. This process typically takes place during the first one-third of the preparation program. The remainder of the course consists of practice ACT and/or SAT examination, with individualized, detailed review of wrong answers.

The ACT / SAT preparation course that I provide can be taken as an 8, 12, or 24-week course depending on the number of sessions per week, and includes emphasis on all of the following:

  • Arithmetic and Pre-Algebra
  • Algebra and Coordinate Geometry
  • Geometry
  • Trigonometry
  • Practice Exams and Individualized Review

In addition, I also assist students in preparing for the test-taking experience itself, including time management and dealing with test-day nervousness and anxiety.

PSAT Preparation

The PSAT (Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test) is administered jointly by the College Board and the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC). It's usually administered to high school juniors to help them prepare for the SAT examinations. But the PSAT isn't just a "practice test." It's also used by the NMSC as the major part of the selection process for National Merit Scholarships, as well as by some state and private scholarship agencies.

Because doing well on the PSAT dramatically increases a student's chances of receiving a scholarship, this isn't a test to be taken lightly or brushed aside as "just practice." I offer specialized PSAT preparation courses for high school students who are preparing for the PSAT exam. Because the PSAT usually is administered early in the student's junior year of high school, it's highly recommended that students desiring PSAT preparation contact me during their sophomore year.
