Summer Tutoring and Test Preparation

Summertime is an opportunity to correct academic deficiencies, prepare for competitive examinations, and enrich students' understanding.

Summer vacation originally came about because youngsters were needed to work on family farms during the growing season, and that's still the case in some places.

Here in the Queens / Nassau County area, not so much.

Around here, summertime has traditionally been a time for students to relax between the rigors of two academic years. For the most part, that's how it should be. Kids need a chance to relax and unwind, as well as to just be kids and enjoy all that summertime has to offer. Learning to play and enjoy life is important, too, and I think that's how kids should spend most of their summer vacations.

The problem is that for many students, summertime is also a time to forget what they learned during the preceding year. For most kids, this isn't a serious problem. Teachers usually spend a few weeks reviewing the preceding year's work at the beginning of the fall semester, and this usually is enough to get the kids back up to speed.

For kids who just barely squeaked by during the previous year, however, a couple of weeks of review in September will not be enough. Despite their best intentions, their hopes, and their sincere promises to "do better this year," the fact is that if they were behind when school let out for the summer, they're going to be even more behind when they return to school in the fall.

What's saddest about this is that it doesn't have to be. Summertime is a great time for kids to brush up on academics, especially because they can focus upon those subjects in which they need the most work, without the added pressure of a full schedule of classes. A few hours a week of summer tutoring by a qualified, professional tutor can make all the difference for these kids by making them ready to face the academic challenges of a new school year.

Summer Test Preparation Tutoring

Summertime is also a great time to prepare for the TACHS, SHSAT, and CHSEE Examinations, which are given in the fall. These competitive tests are quite challenging, and students who start preparing for them during the summer will have a significant advantage over those who wait until September, right before the tests are given.

Summer is also a good time to prepare for the SAT, ACT, and PSAT examinations. I specialize in preparing students for the Math portions of all three of these exams.

The PSAT examination is taken early in a student's Junior year of high school, so the best time to prepare for it is during the summer between the student's Sophomore and Junior years. The PSAT isn't just "practice" for the SAT. It's a highly competitive test whose results determine eligibility for National Merit Scholarships. There's no better way for a college-bound youngster to spend a few hours a week of his or her summer than preparing for this important examination.

The summer is also a great opportunity for students who will be entering their Senior year of high school to prepare for the SAT and ACT tests. The last chance for students to take the SAT and ACT exams in time to submit them to colleges for September admission comes during the fall of the student's senior year. Obviously, a student whose summer included several hours a week of professional preparation and review will be better prepared for these critical examinations.

Summer Enrichment Tutoring

Many parents enroll their children for enrichment tutoring during the summer. Youngsters who have an interest in entering specialized professions like math, engineering, medicine, and the sciences both need and enjoy an opportunity to expand their educational efforts beyond what is taught in their schools. Summer time is a great opportunity for them to do just that. I can custom-design a specialized program to address your child's specific interests, needs, and dreams.
